God loves the ordinary! “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.” Acts 4:13 Sometimes we read of the great exploits of the Apostles and Disciples and we imagine them as being elite, superior. and far more gifted than ourselves. Yet the more I ponder Acts 4:13 and the Gospels I am certain that they were as ordinary, normal, and weak as I am. They were just like me.
It seems the boys were slow to discern, learn, and even grow. Yet grow, they did! What was the secret to their “extreme makeover”? Being with Jesus. Mark 3:14 states: “And He appointed twelve, so that they would be with Him.” He didn’t chose the twelve so He could start Jesus University, Plant a church, build a House of Prayer, establish a Missions Board or any of these noble endeavors. No, he simply chose them to be with Him. Why? Because your peers have greatest influence in our lives. Being with Jesus meant they had the opportunity, the potential to become like Him! They would begin to take on His character and nature! What an incredible statement these weak uneducated, untrained, “red-necks” had been with JESUS and it was obvious to all!
Don’t fear we have the same opportunity to “be with Jesus!” How you ask? Jesus said it was better that He should go so that Holy Spirit would come. The Third Person of the Trinity dwells on the inside of you, Christ-follower! We believe that He dwells on the inside. We communion with the Holy Spirit by talking to Him (prayer) and speaking His words (Bible) back to Him! Oh, that it would be said of me that the “he has been with Jesus!” Take time today in prayer to go beyond petition, or asking God for things. Come like a child full of faith and ask questions, share your heart, speak to God about His words. Talk about the things you understand and the things you seek to understand. Holy Spirit is the best teacher! Spend time with Him and watch, you are gonna get good at this!
