Pastor Decides To Live With Muffed Sign

JOPLIN, Mo. — After spending $2,000 to upgrade his church’s sign, and fighting the board for the money, pastor Chad Thomas was chagrined to see the word “church” spelled incorrectly.
“My secretary was gone that day and I’m not much of a speller — it’s my fault,” he says. “I signed off on the final copy.”
04_inside     Now Thomas is trying to turn the error into a plus — and perhaps save his job. Because of the tight economy the church doesn’t have money to re-do the work, so Thomas is hoping to generate positive publicity instead.
The church launched an “RU Ready?” campaign in newspapers and billboards, playing off the misspelled word “Chruch.” The ads read, “RU ready to attend a great church? At First Baptist Chruch you don’t have to be perfect, because neither are we!”
Thomas hopes the publicity campaign will bear fruit before his annual review by the board, coming up next month. He also hopes it sets First Baptist apart.
“Anything to distinguish us from the seven other churches in this immediate area,” he says.
