Said Conrad Cornelius O’Donald O’Dell: My very young friend who is learning to spell: “The A is for Ape. And the B is for Bear. The C is for Camel. The H is for Hare. The M is for Mouse. And the R is for Rat. I know all the twenty-six letters like that. . .” “Through to Z is for Zebra. I know them all well.” Said Conrad Cornelius O’Donald O’Dell. “So now I know everything anyone knows. From beginning to end, from the start to the close. Because Z is as far as the alphabet goes.” Then he almost fell flat on his face on the floor When I picked up the chalk and drew one letter more! A letter he never had dreamed of before! And I said, “You can stop, if you want, with the Z. Because most people stop with the Z, but not me! In the places I go there are things that I see That I never could spell if I stopped with the Z. I’m telling you this ’cause you’re one of my ends My alphabet starts where your alphabet ends!”. . . So on beyond Z! It’s high time you were shown That you really don’t know all there is to be known.- Dr. Seuss
Knowledge is not enough! Adam & Eve fell when the ate of the tree of knowledge of Good & Evil. We live in a scientific digital age of enlightenment. The more knowledge we gain the dimmer our knowledge of God grows. He is irreducable and incomprehensible. He is Higher than, wider than, greater than, all we know. God had given them all they needed to be sustained by Him in the Garden…the quest for knowledge. Interestingly, satan appealed to their desire for godliness…but, while it resulted in knowledge it was void of life. A form of godliness but void of power.
Augustine (Mike’s Friend not the other guy) was once at the beach and he saw a small boy digging a hole and then running to ocean filling a bucket and dumping the water in the hole. The little boy did this over and over again. Finally, Augustine ran over to the child and asked: “What are you doing?” Sir, I am trying to dump the entire ocean into this hole. Augustine said, “Don’t you know that’s impossible?” The young man replied “Sir, it is no different than you trying to fully comprehend the Trinity and the vastness of the Godhead.” Suddenly before his eyes the little boy disappeared. Augustine had been studying and struggling with comprehending the Trinity. He had just had a divine encounter.
Rather than seek knowledge of God our primary goal should be to seek to know God. This does not in any means discount the need to study the scripture. But the goal should not be to gain knowledge but rather to know God and be known by God.
You really don’t know all there is to be known. . .Thank God. So on beyond Z! It’s high time you were shown That you really don’t know all there is to be known. Dr. Seuss
